Dept. of Getting a Slow Start

The First Day of 2011...
... started very nicely, with the smallest gathering of buddies we've had in some time; a couple of folks had prior plans and our old buddy carnyjack was running a fever. Still Dr. Gonzo was there, and one of our old friends from the Barbarossa days; a fellow Fourth Estate member. I had the enjoyable duty of drinking champagne, something I only do at New Year's. All in all? Quiet, but a good start to the year.

And then things got really, really uncomfortable.

Went to bed, and woke up perhaps three or four hours later, with my hands so swollen and painful that I couldn't get back to sleep. I tried the now-usual tactic of getting up and walking around, to give my blood circulation a fighting chance and to give the inflamed nerves in my wrists and arms a chance to go back to something like normal. (Just for the record, when hand pain wakes me up it's usually an exquisitely miserable mix of carpal tunnel flareup,  the RA and, more rarely, the Reynaud's.)  It was probably because I did a lot of vegetable and fruit prep getting ready for the evening, on top of having kneaded dough for bread.

I tried sleeping on the living room; that didn't work. Bob woke up, gave me a huge amount of painkilling drugs and drew me a really, really hot bath, which felt wonderful. I crawled back into bed - and the pain started again. A certain amount of crying ensued. Then it was back out to the living room.

I was so tired, but the pain kept me awake until, I assume, the painkillers kicked in, and Ii nodded off sitting up. I woke up just enough to put a heavy reading pillow on my lap so that my head would hit it, instead of the table in front of the couch. I think I may have slept about an hour that way, then I just crawled into a more comfortable position on the couch.

And slept until 4:30 p.m.

The rest of the day, such as it was, wasn't too bad, and was certainly much better in terms of pain. I'm going to bed now, and if I'm lucky, I won't wake up on Jan. 2nd the way I did Jan. 1st.

What a lousy way to start the year. I suppose the "sensible" thing to do would be to avoid anything like chopping or bread kneading - but ferheavenssake one has to be able to get on with life, no? I do hope all the sleep will have helped and it won't flare up again today. Thinking of you.

but ferheavenssake one has to be able to get on with life, no?

Yes, that's the thought I had, immediately after BB and I puzzled out the probable reason for the intense pain. Today I can answer, "Yes; the trick is to rearrange your life so that you can do those things without causing the pain.

Thanks for your thoughts.

*pats your hands softly* I have carpal tunnel (though not the other conditions) so I at least know the loneliness of the middle of the night pacing. I hope you are feeling better soon.

I hope it doesn't sound too selfish to say that it feels good to know someone else understands it. BB has tremendous pain on a more or less chronic basis, and so he understands - but sometimes I feel as if he's the only one.

Thanks - and I am feeling better today - still a little swelling upon awakening, but the shooting pains have receded.

Thank you, maia; I'm working on doing very little today that could hurt my hands. (Except, of course, typing, and I shall try to do that in as careful a fashion as possible.)

Hand pain
Louie has three different chronic pain conditions, one of which is a conventional arthritis and two of which aren't, so I am familiar (on a second-hand level) with a lot of the pain you describe. It sounds pretty awful and I am hoping you get things worked out so you can go back to your normal life. Hang in there. *Hugs*.

Re: Hand pain
I think, like many of us, I'll be redefining exactly what "normal life" is, but I'll make it work. Thanks for the hugs.

That is a crappy way to start the year. I hope it gets better soon.

p.s. Give Carnyjack my condolences as well. Hope he is feeling better as well.

Ack, I am so sorry you're dealing with that awfulness. I hope it goes away very soon.

Oh, man. There really are few things worse than pain that strikes in the middle of the night - somehow it just makes it seem more terribly likely that it will never go away.

Many, many hugs!

The dark does make it worse; you're quite correct, but morning does eventually come!
