Dept. of Wonderful Surprises

So I Turned On WTTW

And there was The Big Bang.

What a great New Year's Day night surprise. Oh,  hell, it's more than that. It's pure joy.  Eleventy (Eleventy!) and Amy (Amy!) and Rory (Rory!) and River (River!!)

Now excuse me. I've an episode to watch.

Ah nice. I was getting nostalgic with Diagnosis Murder all day.

Love BBT. One of my kids has the first 4 seasons on DVD. He got season 4 for xmas and we both watched it in it's entirety.

The other got Chuck (again all 4 seasons so far) but I have never really gotten into that one.

Wrong show - Kaff is referring to The Big Bang, a wonderfully fun Doctor Who episode at the back end of the previous season!

The wonderful thing about maruad is that I suspect he knows it. He's a long time fan who most definitely appreciates DW. Heh.

But my goodness, wasn't it wonderful to see that tonight!

How was your Turn of the Year? I hope it was spent with the people you wanted to spend it with, with lots of wit, affection, companionship and a sense of impending 2012-ish adventure.

Nah, that was how we spent the penultimate night of 2011. The final night itself was spent in our favourite way, namely going for a walk together in the deepening high-summer twilight and then coming home to read quietly and fall asleep before midnight for a change. I love this. Makes up for all the decades I had to share the final night of the year with anything up to 25,000 strangers, pretending to enjoy entertaining them :D

I never expected to still be in the vertical and breathing by 2012. A wonderful surprise, as every year has been for a long time!

Well it sounds as if you had exactly the Turn of the Year you wanted; hurrah!

Opps. One of my kids is a Dr Who fan. I have tried but it never seemed to stick for me.

Tell your kid that a friend of yours in Chicago approves of his taste. Heh.

Your kids are very lucky to have you, you know. I hope they know it!

(You know, I've never watched the Big Bang Theory, but I have lots of friends who say it's really a bit of a love song to fandom, or at least some sorts of fans. So, should I put it in my queue at some time?)

I like DW but I haven't been in to the range where I think of myself as a fan. I didn't realize the BB you refered to was DW.

I do really like BBT. I don't know if there are any DW references on the show though which seems odd in retrospect. They don't really mention manga either (afaik).

Even if The Big Bang Theory doesn't mention Doctor Who, my guess is that friends who like it think it reflects at least a couple of accurate views of general SF fandom. Anything that doesn't make cruel, implacable fun of us would be a win in my book.

If you try it, start from the beginning as the characters do evolve and there are jokes that rely on having seen past episodes to appreciate.

One of the secondary WTTW feeds on cable was running DW all weekend. Considering the weekend I had, it... helped. {sigh}

I didn't catch the DW marathon, but knew it was there; glad it could make things better for you - and I'm really sorry that the past weekend sucked for you. (I read your recounting of the Christmas Card affair, and I wish that had not happened.)

It's actually So Bloody Typical of the lines of communication on that side that at first Mum thought the note was RE my grandmother passing, because we've been expecting for years to hear an "oh, right, um..." about her a-long-time-after-the-fact just like this ... {sigh}
