Dept. of Taking a Break

Things That Aren't Solely My Mother

I thought you might like to see a little bit of Wolfville, the town I was raised, and learn a little bit about it. So here are some pictures, and a link to a reasonably good Wikipedia article on the town. I think it was ultimately a great place to grow up in. Not many towns of 3,000 (at the time) give you a chance to see the Bolshoi Ballet and Joan Baez, among other wonderful memories. It is definitely a small town, but there is a level of culture here that's amazing, plus ... well, go read the information.

Here's the cafe from which I've sent my posts. And here's a little bit about Just Us Coffee, because they're just a little awesome (Argh. Except for this story about their maybe being non-union friendly. Gah. I hope it's not true, and that they end up hiring the kids back. It sounds good.)

But you are going to have to see a picture of my mother, as she was when she was a young girl.

A small town with culture sounds like an ideal place to live.

And I keep ending up with this song going through my head: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4P0Q6k2TOU

It had its problems, but Wolfville definitely has been deep in my soul all my life, and for good reasons.

And That song is so very important to those of us from Nova Scotia. Thanks for providing me another version of it(from Gordon Lightfoot, who has been sort of a national troubadour for Canada from time to time!

I love a post about Nova Scotia! We only went to Wolfville once, briefly, but it seemed nice. We did a driving tour one day up through that area from Halifax.

It's strange to see you mention Just Us! here though, because I have a very socially-conscious cousin who lives in Dartmouth and he was posting on Facebook about that issue. I was confused for a minute where I was!

And your mother is lovely. :)

Oh, wow! You went through my home town - another piece of proof that the world is so very much smaller, and friendlier, than we sometimes think it is. And you have a cousin in Dartmouth; cool.
If he's like I am, he's tremendously disappointed in what Just Us is allegedly doing. My Best Beloved phoned me from Chicago last night to tell me not to buy any coffee from them, which is what we'd both hoped to do, because we love their coffee. I very much hope that they change their tune about the union, rehire the workers and negotiate a fair contract. Then they'll really be practicing all that they preach.

And yes, my mother is rather lovely. When I was young I thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world. I still think that.

Oh, I talked to my mother about all the friends I have online, and told her especially about you, and how I hope to meet you soon in person.

*hugs and so much love*

*Blushes* You know, I am so worried about that!! What if I'm too loud/not loud enough/a dork/horrid?! I am so nervous and...omg...I am so worried everyone will walk away going 'yeesh - well, it was good to know her for a bit'

*headdesk*

Never mind me...I get nervy, lol!

Give your mom all my love, sweetie. Hope she's doing a bit better...

Heh. My dear, this is the fear I have always held in the back of my mind when I meet people. And yet, folks seem to want to talk to me a second and sometimes even a third time - and I suspect they'll do the same for you. I know I've already talked to you once in a non-LJ way, and I'm rather looking forward to doing it again!
