In Honor of The Tenth Anniversary - the Ninth Doctor

Not my words (perhaps those will come later), but this is a really nice run-down of why the Ninth Doctor is awesome. And why he is one of my favorite three Doctors.

Read and enjoy, and come back, if you want, to squee about the Ninth Doctor with me.

Nice article. Much as I love Ten, Nine is really outstanding! I would have loved him for another season.

I would have adored a second season with him. He and Billie Piper had amazing chemistry, whether one thought of it as platonic or romantic, or both even; the production staff and writers were firmly in the groove, and I'd love to have seen how Eccleston might have handled many of the stories in S02.

Mind you, I think that watching Eccleston and Piper in Army of Ghosts and Doomsday might have completely wrecked me, in a way that the two didn't hurt me with Ten. The thought of Nine burning up a sun to reach Rose ... OK, yeah, that just makes my heart ache.

Anyhow, I'd like to hope that Eccleston might change his mind and be willing to participate in some future anniversary event. One can dream ....

Oh yes, they worked wonderfully together!

It's a pity Eccleston seems to dislike his role so. I do hope he change his mind one day as well.

Very nice! I will always be an Old School Who Fan first, the Fourth Doctor will always be "My Doctor," but I wouldn't have watched more than a handful of that first season of New Who if it hadn't been for Christopher Eccleston's performance as the Doctor. He remains my favorite of the New Who Doctors, and second only to Tom Baker among all Doctors. It made me very sad to hear he wouldn't be part of the 50th, even if I understood Chris not wanting to come back. I mean Tom Baker didn't want to do the 20th anniversary special way back when. I love Nine. <3 <3 <3

My current favorite Old School Doctor is the Third Doctor, but I'm becoming very fond of the Seventh Doctor, too!

Oh, Nine. I had seen a lot of classic DW growing up, but Nine is far and away my favourite Doctor. It's everything mentioned in that article: his haunting grief that overshadows everything and makes him determined to stay alone and detached - yet he can't stop himself needing to get involved, needing to save people, and needing a hand to hold.

And Eccleston's acting in the role has never, ever been equalled, before or since: the expression of aching pain on the Doctor's face, his brilliant smile, the way his expression can change like lightning. His perfect delivery - when I first heard the Turn of the Earth speech, I was gripped.

A lot of people complain about some of the silly scripts - farting aliens, plastic Mickey and so on - but those pale into insignificance next to the acting and the way Eccleston and Piper played off each other. I much prefer Rose with Nine; her wonder, down-to-earth caring and sense of humour are just lovely to watch. In Tennant's era, she's turned into someone who can be just silly, selfish and oblivious a lot of the time. Rose in Tooth and Claw is not the Rose who stands up to the Doctor in Dalek.

The series, in my mind, has never reached the heights of Nine's era, either in acting or writing. I hope it will again some day.

(I'm with you on Three and Seven, by the way, and while I used to like Four as a child, I find I really don't much care for him now.)

The Key to Time in general, and The Pirate Planet in particular, remain my favorite Doctor Who. I own the set and rewatch it more than I do Nine's season. I don't actually rewatch all of Nine's season, since I'm not a big fan of Rose Tyler, or of all of Nine's Lonely God angst, but I do rewatch the episodes with Jack Harkness in them. He's really my favorite thing from New Who, or he was until the Children of Earth storyline, which is a subject for another day.

A lot of people complain about some of the silly scripts - farting aliens, plastic Mickey and so on

And yet, even those episodes had their strengths, and when you stop to think about that first series, the strengths and the strong episodes outweighed and outnumbered the weak ones, hands down.

You're right about preferring Rose with Nine, definitely so in the Watsonian sense. Although I think S02 Rose recovered her balance and much of her maturity as of The Impossible Planet - I cheered the way she got the station crew together and helped save them - the first two thirds of the series really put her on her back foot. It speaks very well for Billie that she was good enough to (mostly) rise above that.

And, while you and I may part company on the post Tenth Doctor Whoniverse (I have a great burning love for the Eleventh and his connected family), we stand united in feeling that the Ninth is unsurpassed in terms of quality. I really adore the Ninth, and that will never, ever change.

Thanks for the link! That article did a lovely job of articulating what made Christopher Eccleston's Doctor such a stand-out.

I love most of the Doctors throughout the run of the show, but none hold anywhere near as large as place in my heart as Nine. Eccleston was extraordinarily good in the role, imbuing the character with so much grief and fury and radiant love. He could make an over the top nickname like The Oncoming Storm feel like an entirely appropriate descriptor. Even with a costume that would blend into a crowd on a street, I never doubted the alienness of his character, but alien never meant unfeeling or incomprehensible.

Nine is my Doctor. He's not my first--that honor belongs to Paul McGann, because I saw the TV movie when it first aired--but he's the one that made me into a fan and who best embodies my conception of the Doctor. I consider the fact that he only got one season the greatest tragedy in Doctor Who production, even as it is also one of the strengths of his run. He had one fantastic arc, a story of deeply wounded hearts beginning to heal and falling in love. His presence on the show had no time to jump the shark or grow stale, nothing like the year of specials that turned a lot of fans against Ten.

And oh yes, Nine and Rose had some of the most glorious hand porn ever to air on television, starting with the very first shot of Eccleston's Doctor. He said "run," and Rose ran with him, and in our hearts we ran with them.

Absolutely! You've delineated and described the Ninth so beautifully with that phrase - and you're so right that it was truly the Ninth who was "The Oncoming Storm." The Eleventh eventually came to inhabit the title, but he had to grow into it. Eccleston was the storm, from his first appearance.

Nine and Rose had some of the most glorious hand porn ever to air on television, starting with the very first shot of Eccleston's Doctor. He said "run," and Rose ran with him, and in our hearts we ran with them.

Completely and happily agreed. And, again, you say it so beautifully.

Beautiful tribute, it really said it all. Nine just blazed. He was special, and intense, and he deserves so much love ♥
