I Am Bemused, As One Might Expect

I've been blogging on LJ and/or DW for more than a decade.

I've been online for far longer - BB and I figure we've been sailing the sea since 1996, well before the Web. Back then, my connection with fandom was Old School, and Usenet was my lifeline. RASFF*, of blessed memory, kept me busy well into the night every night, back in the days when we couldn't be online and get phone calls at the same time. (I still recall the song of the modem, something you youngsters might not recognize.) Today I can't even access Usenet, and the last time I did, RASFF was shell filled with spam.

Getting involved with online fandom, first via TWoP and then through LJ and (eventually) Dreamwidth, more than filled the void. It introduced me to some amazing, talented, kind people. It was where I picked up a pen and started writing fiction again. It was where I learned to be less self-congratulatory in matters of this world - politics, identity, and other issues - and at least a little more willing to learn, to stretch beyond my comfort zone. It has been truly far more rewarding than I ever expected it to be. Thank you all for making that the case.

I don't expect to maintain my LJ after a few more weeks, but I'm so glad I came here in the first place.

Usenet, OMG. My very first (brief) foray into DW on-line fandom.

One thing I loved about Usenet was that you could have long involved conversations and easily keep up with multiple conversations just by threading. One of the reasons I've liked LJ/DW is because it shares at least a little of that, unlike FB, which is horrible to try to have conversations on, or Twitter, or (help me, jeebus) tumblr.

It kind of blows my mind that I've been on LJ longer than you - and the number of posts I made isn't that much larger than mine.

(I would guess you posted way more regularly than me - even though I've been on LJ for almost 12 years now, for the first few months, I mostly used it to post in comms and comment on other people's LJs, and there were periods where I wouldn't post for months at the time).

So you are still planning on leaving... Well, I suppose I usually check your LJ by going to the URL directly rather then via friend feed, so I suppose it doesn't matter that much if it's kaffyr.livejournal.com or kaffyr.dreamwidth.com. And I do have a Dreamwidth account I can dust off if I want to comment. But I am kind of sad that the group of people who can read my friends-locked entries is getting smaller and smaller. (which is a selfish way of looking at it, I know, but it is what it is)

I haven't completely made up my mind, although I'm pretty much irritated enough at LJ to make the final leap. There might be something that convinces me to stay, although I can't think what it might be. I might also simply let my paid account lapse, go back to 6 icons, and enable adblocker, so that I can still talk to people who choose to stay here, and be able to see f'locked posts.

(I would urge you to import your stuff to your DW account, just to make sure you've got an exit strategy if you decide you need it.)

Hee!! I was on a mailing list (email) before a friend got me here. Seems like it just happened, though I can't imagine life without ElJay!! So glad to be a part of your life - and despite the many headaches ElJay gives us all, it is awesome what it has done for us!

I do enjoy being here, but "here" for me can as easily be Dreamwidth. Although, as I said to strannik01, I haven't completely made up my mind, I may well let my paid account lapse. And leaving entirely is still on the table.

So you were on a mailing list - that's pretty close to being on Usenet.

*hugs back*
