My Heart is Full

Twenty Nine

I wanted to find a way to describe the best thing that has ever happened to me.

I thought, perhaps, Shakespeare. I was thinking of one sonnet, but it didn't quite work. Then I saw this one. This one fit. So I typed it here, and it wasn't until I had finished that I looked at its number. It was Sonnet 29.

When, in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself, and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,
Desiring this man's art, and that man's scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate;
     For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings
     That then I scorn to change my state with kings.

I've been with Bob for 29 years.

I'm so glad you feel like that after 29 years - I hope I will!

That's one of my favourite of the sonnets - I even customised it for Faramir to send to Eowyn once, as a birthday drabble for altariel...

Thanks; I feel, every day, as if I have been with him my whole life, and, at the same time, as if it has only been a short time. It is, indeed, better with two for us. And I know you'll get to experience that feeling!

(Oh, and it would have been something he would have thought and said, wouldn't it? I loved reading your drabble!)

Thank you! It was the last line of the original, about scorning to change one's state with kings, that made me think "Steward! Steward!"; and writing a sonnet to his bride on the eve of their wedding would have been such a Faramirish thing to do. Now you've got me wondering about an anniversary sonnet...

Then go, you, and create some more beauty! (Eowyn and Faramir have always, always been my favorite L0tR couple! (Followed closely by Beren and Luthien.)

Very Sweet
In honour of the great moment I went searching and found this (though I prefer King Biscuit Boy's Version more).

Re: Very Sweet
The first thing I heard when I awoke this morning - and from Chicago's great blues queen, no less! Thank you so much!

Many thanks! I found the sonnet serendipitously, and wonderfully, apropos.

It all sounds marvelous. Interesting to note that you and Bob had only been together for about a year when I first met you --you seemed to fit so perfectly and be so right for each other that it seemed to me like, "Childhood sweethearts -- had been together at all times since they were old enough to know what the word 'together' meant." Yet I know that in real life there are "first meetings," and even courtships. In any event, I am very happy for both of you and like the sonnet.

Thanks, Nate - I knew from about the second time I met him, between one minute and the next, that it was Bob for me. He figured it out a few weeks later. And that was that. *smiles*

Isn't Sonnet thirty the one with the lines "Bugger ye off, ye slimey old bastard", and "Prithee, the only intercourse he shall get is from mine own barristers"? Thank goodness this isn't our thirtieth anniversary!

What? Next year? Oh.

A high school friend gave me a copy of the indispensable Shakespeare's Bawdy (couldn't quickly find a cover pic), but it was years later until I recognized the author as the great scholar of idiom and colloquialism Eric Partridge.
Sounds like you need a copy; you aren't colorful enough by half.
