Odd Thoughts and Bits and Bobs
- You know your day is off to a less than stellar start when you fumble in the refrigerator for the soymilk box, to put the stuff on your cereal (hey, sometimes I just like soymilk, OK?) and find yourself pouring beef broth on your Oatmeal Squares. Luckily, that was a few days ago.
- You know you've reached That Point in life when you attend the funeral of your best Chicago friends' father, father-in-law, and grandfather, and someone asks, plaintively, "When did we get to be the grown-ups?" And you remember that your mother has already outlived all the women in her family by at least three years. And you realize you really, really don't want to hear the phone ring late at night, And you wish you could go to see Harry Potter with her, because she deserves not to have to go out to see it alone, an 82-year-old woman who hates going out, but is the sole member of her surviving circle of friends who loves Harry Potter, but Nova Scotia is a long way from Chicago. And then you realize that the call is going to come, whether you want it or no, so you re-remember to make phone calls of your own, regularly, to tell her how much you love her, and to listen to everything she has to say. And you remind yourself to pick up her phone calls, even when you think you're too tired to talk to her, because, really, you aren't. And at least the two of you can talk about the movie, after you've both seen it.
- You realize that perhaps your cats are right to look at you with a jaundiced eye when you replace the perfectly good names they've had for a while now with new ones. And you think calling your cats Peaches and Trouble and Barge is hilarious for more than 30 seconds at a time. Perhaps, you think, it's sleep dep.
- You admit that you've been fighting one scene in your OT3 h/c bingo ficathon entry for Too Damned Long now. And then you look at the phrase "OT3 h/c bingo ficathon" and ask yourself just when it was that you learned a new language.
