Dept. of I Like This

Today had sunshine, pork chops, cake and a firetruck

It also had Thai peppers, a new tea strainer (that's really, really large), Thai eggplants, a Japanese maple syrup Swiss roll cake, some crazed last minute demands from work that I was able to meet, one less day until Mission Surprise Mom, some very nice spaghetti squash (with butter and maple syrup - hey, more maple syrup!) to go with the pork chops and salad, and, all in all, was a better day than it could have been.

The firetruck was in a funeral home parking lot. It was surrounded by many uniformed Chicago firefighters, and bedecked in bunting, and I felt vaguely guilty at being very annoyed that I couldn't get out of the parking lot because of it because, hey, it was a departed firefighter being honored, no doubt about it, but yeah, still, annoyed.

(I'd been there to offer my respects to a colleague whose parent had died, then had to sit in the parking lot to have a mobile conversation with my boss, who needed to fill out a form on how I do one of my regular beat duties because TPTB apparently needed it, which parking lot delay led to my being trapped by firefighters and bunting-bedecked ladder trucks and where did this sentence start, anyhow?)

Once I got out, though, I realized I was close to the local Korean humongo-mart,(which may be one of my favorite places these days) and that's where I headed, to get the foodstuffs and the tea strainer. I was a happy shopper - happy enough that, when I got home to yet another request for information from my poor editor, I only kvetched a brief while.

And sunshine, there was, indeed, a world of sunshine. And that was very good.

I suspect you and I would have lots of fun shopping in this market. It's amazing; loads of things you have to puzzle out, or ask someone about, many things you might have heard about but can't find in run of the mill groceries, plus an amazing food court ... yeah, I could definitely go on at too much length about H-Mart. (Have no idea what the H is for. Heh.)

Sounds awesome.

How do you prepare spaghetti squash?

The way I do it is in the microwave;
1) I cut the squash lengthwise and dig out the seeds and central mushy stuff.
2) I put the halves, cut side down, in a baking dish, with about 1/4 C of water, and cook with a cover (like plastic wrap with holes in it, or a loose baking dish cover so that a bit of the steam can escape) for about 10 to 12 minutes on High.
3) I test for doneness by sticking a fork into the shell. It should go in easily.
4) I maneuver the cooked squash out of the baking dish and ditch the water. Then I usually put the squash back in, or on another dish, cut side up.
6) I put butter into the depression where I scooped out the seeds, etc.
7) Depending on whether I want a sweet sort of dish or a savory dish, I'll then add brown sugar, or maple syrup, or garlic and spics, or even tomato sauce.
8) I then take a fork, and start to break up the cooked squash flesh. It breaks into threadlike pieces - hence the "spaghetti" part of the name, because it's stringy and looks a little like spaghetti. You pull the flesh crosswise, and toss the resultant strings with whatever is melting together with the butter in the middle. (Some people break the squash into the strings first and then add the fixings, which is also alright.)
