Dept. of Fandom gets a Gander

Why I Like PBS, Reason # FANDOM!

Sometimes I go to You Tube for reasons other than fanvids. Not often, you understand, but sometimes. And of course when I actually do that?

Fandom happens. Heh.

(And fandom discussed without all those enraging "Oh, goodness me! Just look at all these amusing freaks and losers! Why do they do these things? Amusing, eh wot? Oh, let's just point and jeer, shall we?" overtones that make me want to chew nails and spit tacks. Yay, PBS!)

Oh, cool! I'm putting it in my watch-later queue. :)

It's worth it.

Would be cooler if they had a single woman anywhere in the video. Major oversight.

Ack. Now I feel more than a bit oblivious for not twigging to that. I did like the bit about the woman who created her own story out of Adventure Time. I'm sorry now that they didn't find her and talk to her.

Yes, I liked that, too, but I thought it was weird that they were talking to her co-worker (or boss?) and not her.

Otherwise I thought it was really well done. Surprising oversight on their part.

Hmm. Now I feel like leaving comment asking if they had the chance to, or thought to, look for women and girls involved in fanart. It might be interesting to read answers, if they gave any.

AWESOME, lol!!

Amazing how Fandom just HAPPENS when you are least expecting it!

Fandom ... death will not release you. And I'm glad of it. Heh.

Hugs to you!

Glad I went traveling through new You Tube areas so that I could find it!

This was indeed overall a very well done and respectful video. Nice to see a piece on fandom that doesn't feel like it's pointing and laughing. sahiya beat me to pointing out the glaring and bizarre total lack of ladies. Maybe fanart isn't quite as heavily female-dominated as fanfic, but there's still a high percentage of female fan artists. It should have been easy to interview one or more, but for some reason they didn't. Hmph.

I was amused by the accurate depiction of Sherlock fandom as especially prone to oddness. We get VERY bored in the long waits between series and turn to crack to keep ourselves occupied.

Yeah, I'd like to ask the creators why they didn't reach out to women - or if they did and were rebuffed, or just couldn't touch base. At that point, I'd say, "then you might have waited until you did touch base instead of going ahead and creating something without taking all the female-type people who create and appreciate fan art."

We get VERY bored in the long waits between series and turn to crack to keep ourselves occupied.

Heh. I tend to think of crack as whimsy on steroids, and its flowering as the result of both boredom and mischief.
