Dept. of I Have No Words

Prayers and Vibes

If you are inclined to pray to any gods, please send a prayer their way for my mother, Mary Glen Keirstead Routliffe Stirling.

She has been ill for some weeks and went in to hospital last night. This morning we learned it was advanced stage cancer.

She may be having an operation today or tomorrow. She is 86 next month and is medically fragile for surgical purposes. The operation may kill her. The cancer will kill her. She is making decisions now.

My brother is with her. He is making arrangements to get me up there (Nova Scotia) sometime in the next day or so if he can. She is one of my two best friends in the world, and she doesn't deserve pain. But I want to see her again. This is about as organized as you'll find my thoughts right now.

Oh no!

I hope you can make it to see her and pray that everything goes as best as it possibly can (under truly bad circumstances) for her and you and yours. May the doctors and other caregivers be smart and kind and do their best work and give their best advice and may your Mom find comfort and strength where she can.

(What a lovely photo.)

Thank you so much, Laurel. Isn't the picture beautiful? She was maybe32 when that was taken in our backyard. The little one's my brother and the girl is me. My mother's smile is still as beautiful more than half a century later.

Oh, I'm so sorry! I hope you can see her soon. *hugs *sending lots of good thoughts!

I very much appreciate those good thoughts. It may seem odd, but things like that help right now.

My dear, so sorry. Hoping hard that you get to spend some good time with your mother and that she can be helped to be as free of pain as possible, whatever she decides about the surgery. You are all in my thoughts.

Thank you so much; your wishes are very much the same as mine. Right now I'm in limbo, waiting to hear back from my brother. Trying to concentrate on work is going ... somewhat less well than one might hope.

Oh dear. Sending you good thoughts for calm and strength and acceptance, and safe travels if you do go there.

My parents are around that age too, fortunately with no serious medical issues at the moment, but everything gets complicated at that stage of life.

Calm, acceptance and safe travels are excellent things; thank you. And you are so very right when you say that everything gets complicated at this stage of life. I've been trying to get ready to accept it for about half a year now, but one just can't.

As people on NYPD Blue were wont to say, I'll have a good thought for her.

And travel safe.

Thanks. I'm currently in limbo, waiting to hear from my brother again, and we really don't know what the next step is. It's kind of tensely boring. I want to sleep to get away from it, but that doesn't work. So I may neaten my desk or write something for my boss.

Godspeed, safe and timely travels. Sending thoughts and prayers.

Thank you very much. As I said to someone else a moment ago, my online network of friends and colleagues is helping me get through this day.

Yes, ditto what everyone has already said. Prayers for blessings and comfort through this hard, hard time -- for your mother, you, Bob, your brother, and all who treasure your mother.

I know that whole fragmented-thinking thing. It's weird, but okay. Here's hoping for good surgical outcomes -- as you said, "an improvement of health and surcease from pain, to give her a little more happy time here on earth." And you, more time to spend with her.

Love you, dear.

Oh it's been an interesting day. I just got word from the company that they want to swap out all our Samsung phones for I Phones, while I'll probably be gone. I had just sent word to our tech woman that I wanted to know if the Samsung would operate in Canada and if I needed to get it unlocked.

This time last year, this exact time last year almost, I had just asked the same tech woman if my old Blackberry could be unlocked for my Surprise the Hell Out of Mom Birthday trip, and she told me that they were swapping out our Blackberries for the new Samsungs. While I was gone.

I can't believe it's happening again ... but at least it's keeping my mind off the operating room.

I love you too, dear. Thanks for your support.
