Theater of the Absurd, Where Are You?

Why is it, that in these latter days, people of my acquaintance, including children of Generation Whut-Evar!, can recall (if only dimly), the comedy of Cheech and Chong, but know not of Firesign Theater?

Why?

Yes, "Dave's not here, man" has a certain raffish charm, but put it up against, oh, I don't know...anything Firesign created and it pales into insignificance.

Really: "More Science High - it's gone!" "You must mean Nancy!" "I haven't felt this bad since 'M'!" "Deputy Dan is not your friend." "Aw, they never come up into the hills!" "Osiris, what has happened to your nose?" "I'm the biggest idiot in my country." "A square little fella, not from around here." "Porgy, tire-biter"....

Oh, come now. Are you going to tell me you don't know about Firesign Theater?

Friends, help me now - all you in the know, post your favorite lines, albums, characters, whatever, from Firesign - let me know that I'm not alone in thinking that Firesign is the proper American counterpart to the Pythons!

I never heard of FT until I was almost 30, and to this day have never heard more than a few seconds of it.

Perhaps it's time to gather material for an FST listening party. What do you think? While we are at it I wonder where Ruth is?

Well, wait a minute while I go find a brown paper bag with a pickle, put on my flimsy burnoose, and keep my thumb on my lines.

You do realize that when you come visit us (and you must come visit us) we will force you to listen to, oh, as many as 12 or even 41 seconds' worth....

Take your mucklucks out of the cellophane before they scorch! That's for starters at least. I could fill up your LJ with FST material

I guess I always thought it was a Chicago/midwest/artsy thing that I had to put aside for other midwest/artsy things, such as studying music. But I've also always confused it for Second City, and that was only because of a local six-degrees connection.

omg I had forgotten about FST. I have dim memories about hearing Don't Crush that Dwarf Hand Me Those Pliers... an entire side while my cousin tried to find sugar in his cupboards for coffee... Thai Stick could do that I am told :D (I am not advocating for or against).

A quick google reveals several hits on You Tube alone. Time to get re-acquainted.

Never heard of it. Were they local? I'm actually surprised because the mister and I are kind of nerds for comedy troupes. Vacant Lot, Upright Citizens Brigade, Broken Lizard, The State (and all their permutations), ooh, what was the Seattle one with Speed Walker and Mr. Wizard?, Mr. Show, &c.

Firesign is a quartet of gifted writers and comics who originally hailed from the left coast in the 1960s. They performed live, did a radio show, (well more than one, but a formative one in the 60s, then put out a number of incredible, indescribably good comedy albums, among many, many, many other things. All four have a continuing relationship with radio plays, with SF and with fandom, and as far as I'm concerned they're up there with the Marx Brothers, the Pythons, and the Goon Show for pure off-kilter brilliance. But don't take my word for it: Here are a few urls.

1) Wiki, of course; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firesign_Theater
2) Their own site; http://www.firesigntheatre.com/funway.html
3) A FAQ; http://firezine.net/faq/

And that's probably more than you wanted to know....

Quibble: that's "Deputy dan es su amigo", translated to "Deputy Dan... has no friend(s)".

By the way, what chance *does* a returnin' deceased war vet'ran have for that good-payin' job, more sugar, and the free mule you've been dreaming of?

And lastly, for the moment,

Peorgie: "you can see--it really makes sense...to re-enlist!"

Mudhead: "Is *that* what you're gonna do?"

Peorgie: "Aw, hell, *no*, Mudhead! (chortling) I'm gonna cut the soles off my shoes, sit in a tree and learn to play the flute!"

MMB, three's as charmed as I get
