I'm using my cowslips user icon in memory of a Mother's Day tradition I created. Through most of my childhood, each Mother's Day I would go down into the woods near our home, dig up a clump of wildflowers (always following the Audubon rule of that time -- only taking specimens of plants that I could see at least 25 more of within a circular radius), and transplant the flowers into the flower bed on the north side of the house as a Mother's Day gift. The cowslips were the only ones that never survived. No surprise; the soil simply wasn't wet enough. Imagine my delight when I moved to Toad Woods and found cowslips growing in my pond.

The trillium, jack-in-the-pulpit, and Solomon seal thrived, still strong most of 50 years later when we were selling the house. I transplanted trillium and jack-in-the-pulpit from that flower bed to Toad Hall in the mid-1980s. They did well there until the neighbor's garage that was shading both plants was torn down in the mid-1990s and I didn't transplant them in time to a spot they could at least tolerate.

Planting flowers for your mother is a lovely and creative gift, whether or not the cowslips survived! I always opted for the default "Evening in Paris" cologne, or switched it up with cheap statuettes of cats. Bless her, my mother never once sounded anything less than delighted with what she unwrapped. Heh.

I'm very happy I got this picture. It was taken by a nurse's aide at the hospital, during my last set of visits with her, in 2013 - on the very first day I arrived in August. She was so surprised and pleased to see me, and that's a memory I'll always treasure.

Blessings to her - and to you, love.

*hugs you hard*

Thank you, dear. I hope your Mother's Day was a good one, and that hubby and kiddos treated you like the queen you are!
