Dept. of Good Things

Grateful

Taking my cue from a number of folks on my friends' list, I'm going to find one or more things that I can be happy about each day.

Today is Monday. What am I grateful for?

1. Bob. Always and forever.
2. It's March, almost half-way through, and that means spring is coming.
3. Daylight Savings Time means it's not getting dark at 4:30 and 5 p.m. anymore. That's good!
4. I got my exercises done first thing in the morning today, after four days of not doing them.
5. I'm eating a tiny bit less starch and carbohydrate; I haven't nearly cut down to where I want to, yet, but it's a start.

Hmm. Five - that's not bad.

I think the diet books are full of horse poopy, to be honest. A carrot stick will never be as awesome as, e.g., a warm piece of raisin bread. I loves me some fresh fruit and veggies, but the most delicious fruit, the most creative salad, will never equal the euphoria-inducing pleasure of standing in a When Pigs Fly bakery and inhaling the scents of fresh bread.

My dietary solution is mainly to cut back on snacking/ nibbling as much as possible. It doesn't help that I'm an inveterate sugar fiend, and filling up on veggies/ protein/ beneficial lipids will never completely make the sugar craving go away (especially when I'm tired and stressed out at work). The best I can do is cut back. I haven't eliminated bread entirely, but I don't keep it in the house any more--mainly because the time required to toast it/ butter it/ eat it was taking up so much time in the morning that I was missing my trains. I estimated it also cut out anywhere between 250-300 calories per day, so no surprises that my weight has been slowly ticking downwards. I just have to be careful not to add those calories back in with nibbling/ snacking.

I've also been trying to cut back on wheat-based carbs and add other grains into the mix: brown rice, quinoa, steel-cut oats, millet. I'm not gluten-intolerant, and I don't subscribe to the ridiculous notion that Wheat is the Enemy, but a little variety in the diet is never a bad thing. So: no bread, no pasta, unless I'm at someone else's house or a restaurant.

Adding an extra workout or two each week (Friday and/or Saturday) is also proving beneficial. I'm trying to build up enough bone mass so that I can go off Fosamax after a year. Here's hoping! : )

I'm so glad to hear someone else has the same thoughts about carbs and sweets that I do! You're so right about fresh bread, and sweets! I used to love to bake bread - baked all our bread for a few years there, doing both white and wheat - and now I don't do that at all. Cutting bread out of the house might not work for me, since BB might want some, although he isn't eating as much of it as he used to either.

And I'm so much of an all-day nosher that that's definitely dangerous ground for me as well.

I need to try to start swimming. I got myself a park district swim membership last year, and then never used it. Perhaps a second run at it will be more successful; I really enjoy swimming, and it would be another way to exercise.

The problem with swimming is that it involves a lot more logistics than other forms of exercise (depending on the time of year and whether you're showering, etc at the facilities). You should see all the stuff I have to remember to pack: ear plugs, towel(s), change of clothes, all toiletries, blow dryer, as well as obvious stuff like cap and goggles. I can always tell if I'm missing something because my bag will feel different. Last night I almost left without my toiletries bag.

I really envy runners sometimes, because it seems like all they need to do is throw on their shorts and sneakers, grab the iPod, and go.

However, the benefits of swimming are immense. The cardio workout is like no other form of exercise because it's more work for your body to breathe in the water. And the feeling of calm/ serenity that comes from being immersed in water is wonderful.

Having the braces for a year and a half helped in terms of "training" me not to eat between meals. I used to think I simply couldn't go five or six hours without eating anything, and now I can do so almost without thinking.

One nice thing about living alone is not having to worry about someone else's eating habits. I also no longer have to resist the temptation of whatever my mother brings home. : )

I can't imagine how difficult it is for someone who loves baking bread to try cutting back on carbs. Ugh.

Someday, I need to post my recipe for the millet and black bean mix I do for my lunches. It's warm, filling, tasty, versatile, (I think) reasonably nutritious (containing carbs, veggies, protein, and olive oil), easy to make, and also has the benefit of being meat-free, dairy-free, nut-free, and gluten-free, so if you need a "safe" dish for a potluck, it's probably a good bet.

Swimming is such a wonderful destresser. I find it very meditative. (You're right about the kit - though I get away with costume, goggles and flipflops, plus towel and toiletries - I just try to make sure I've always packed that the night before when not in a bleary rush.)

And as someone who also runs, I can assure you that can be almost as kit-heavy if you let it - at this time of year, as well as clothing (remembering to wear something with a key pocket for my doorkey) and shoes, I might have fingerless gloves, sweatbands, armband to hold my mobile phone, water bottle, and for a longer run glucose tablets!
