Dept. of If You Can't Say Anything Nice

Phyllis Schlafly is Dead

As it says on the tin.
I wish I could think of something nice to say about the woman. She certainly was a bundle of energy. How about these? She had a way with words.

She was also a mean-spirited, hypocritical ultra-conservative force for regression and oppression. And of all those attributes, it may be her hypocrisy that has always rubbed me the most raw. She was able to live her very independent life, dedicated to fighting against independence for women, because she married a rich man.

Faugh. Enough. There were people who loved her, and I am sorry that they feel the loss.

But the world was made worse through her efforts, and if there is a seat of god, she ought to hang her head in shame before it.

Feel free to gank the icon, with credit - I love it too. I do feel bad about speaking ill of the dead, but being dead doesn't change the past, or change what she did, what she believed, etc.

I can only hope so as well. How such people sleep at night, I do not know. May she rest in peace.

You're kinder than I am. I hope she doesn't rest in peace; I hope she is forced to think about what she did. All of eternity should be enough time for her to do so.

Yeah, I'm pretty bitter. God will probably be a bit more merciful.

good riddance
I hope she and Jesse Helms get to share the same banquet of burning coals . . . Reagan, too.

(My own ethical system allows me to do my best to be nice to people when it can make a difference, but I have no compunction about being honest about the damage done by the despicable dead.)

Re: good riddance
I like the phrase "the despicable dead." I think it's particularly apropos here. Mind you, I do believe that if there's an afterlife in which we're still recognizably ourselves, we will have the opportunity to learn and get better. It may take her a long time, but perhaps she'll learn. That's the best I can wish her.

I wasn't even aware she'd died. And I agree with everything you said, and everything everyone else says above. Especially this:

She was able to live her very independent life, dedicated to fighting against independence for women, because she married a rich man.

Evidently, a sense of irony and/or self-awareness were not her strong suit. I agree that an eternity spent contemplating how her actions harmed the lives of others would be entirely appropriate.

I occasionally venture out of my comfort zone on Twitter, and saw many a tweet honestly mourning her. It's a terrible reminder that there are other people dedicated to her causes, like turning the century back a few decades for women.

Dear GOD. Not someone I was familiar with from over here, but we have the type too. I will never, never understand the mindset that says "because I do not want to do these particular things, NOONE should have the right to do them."

I'm so glad you didn't have to deal with her; every nation has their Schlaflys and I'm sure you had some doozies. But she did do some terrible harm over here. AS I've said, I wish nothing but peace for those who loved her and who will miss her. And I'm sorry she didn't have a change of heart during her lifetime, since she was obviously a very determined and intelligent woman. But that's as far as I can honestly go.
