Memo To Self:

When you see commentaries that mention "Moffat" and "Doctor Who" prominently in the description or summary, think seriously about not reading them. The odds are high they will feature an author inveighing against The Moff, with others nodding their heads in agreement; by excising such commentaries from your day, you will lower your blood pressure and quite likely save your computer keyboard and screen from spittle and/or breakage.

(Yeah, yeah, folks have a right to their opinion, and I have f'listers who share that opinion. And sure, enough people hew to the Awful Moff School of Whovian Obsession that I could very well be wrong in my love for his run. I don't fucking care. And I get incredibly tired of swimming through the various One Minute Moff Hates. They make it hard-to-impossible for me to react and interact with thoughtful critiques of Seasons Five through Ten. They're out there, but when I've had to slog through page after page after rant after polemic about Moffat to get to them, I want to stab my eyes with a fork.)

Yeeeaaaahhhhh...I have come across these a few times myself. Hey - I have issues with Rusty and his writing and his Doctors, but I don't slam and get personal the way Moffat-haters can do in certain forums. I have friends who cannot stand the Moff, but they are not rude with it and we can agree to disagree (while enjoying each others fics).

I am sorry about that, sweetie. Never makes one feel good to watch or hear those and you should never be made to doubt the love you have of a character (even if the creator may or may not be problematic).

For the most part, that's the case with me as well. I'm always pleased with the level of civility in our little corner of fandom. I've only run into one or two instances of people whose fic clearly shows how much they hate a given character, for example, and even then, they warn (and I avoid their fics.)

My problems with The Moff tend to be more structural than in his attitude toward women, while the latter seems to be what a lot of the haters want to talk about at length. My problems with Rusty were different ones. And in each case, I was able to find good aspects of what they created. It's the unmitigated hate that throws me for a loop.

I run into these dog-pile-on-the-Moff orgies largely in other places, like tor.com or the Mary Sue, and I should know better, but I go to those places and sometimes get some amazing essays, so I don't want to avoid them.

HUGS to you, as well!

I agree. There are things I can criticize when it comes to Who, but I don't get the enormous amount of hate Moffat receives. It's not proportional, and it makes it impossible to have a discussion.

You've explained my problem in a far more succinct fashion than I did. And the impossibility of true discussion is such a toxic piece of fallout; half the joy of fannish life is just that - joy - and the sharing of it. (I know there are people who claim that the other half of fannish joy is malicious schadenfreude, but I prefer to believe that's not the case.)

All we have to do is wait.

I remember RTD's heyday (as you probably do too) and how everyone IN THE WORLD hated him, and Moffat was the second coming.

And now, they think RTD's era was wonderful.

So give it a few years, and they'll be nostalgic for the Moff.

Heh - that's the mature attitude, one that looks at the cycles of fannish craziness from 30,000 feet, and on some days I can even attain the attitude, and the altitude, myself. Not always, though, as my post makes clear. Sigh.

It's funny that you talk about RTD and how everyone hated him; believe it or not, I never ran into that. I just remember thinking that the overall feel of his run was amorphous and grey, despite there being many great individual episodes. Hearing that there was hate makes me wonder where on earth I was hanging around, that I didn't run into it. Ah, well; small mercies, since I'll always be grateful to him for reviving the franchise, and for Nine. And for his puckish sense of humor.

I try to stay far away from negativity, so just... ignore the haters and instead stay put in my own little corner.

However I remember the issues back in RTDs day, partly because so many people I knew found him problematic. After End of Time aired, I think there were about 3 of us who actually admitted to liking it. (Me, ariafic & jackaholic, if memory serves.)

I just remember thinking that the overall feel of his run was amorphous and grey, despite there being many great individual episodes.
Amorphous and grey?? Please explain further, I find this fascinating. Mostly people were angry about how he treated women (From 'Don't you think she looks tired' onwards, Rose being fobbed off with a Doctor clone), black people (Mickey, Martha), generally bad writing (take your pick) etc etc.

1. What Elisi said. We'll be five minutes into Chib's run, and the fandom will be screeching for Moff to return.

2. I had issues with both RTD and Moff, and mostly they were similar issues. They both had characters they pretty much refused to let go of, and both of them ramped up the angst season after season, until it IMO hit the point of ridiculous melodrama. I was not sorry to see both of them go.

3. But at the same time, they both wrote stories that I loved, stories I hated, and stories that left me frustrated/ scratching my head.

I don't get the Moff hate, though. I think it's a matter of a few people starting it, and sounding smart, and a lot of others wanted to emulate the 'smart' people, and piling on. Lather, rinse, repeat. He had his issues, but he also did a lot that was tremendous, and I think he deserves more credit for those things than he gets.
