Fashion Rearward

Frakkin' Kenley
I honestly don't know what to say.
I have to, reluctantly, acknowledge that the timing of Fashion Week precludes the possibility she actually ripped off Alexander McQueen. I also must, even more reluctantly, that the bridesmaid dress was well done and perky. And blue. It was blue.
But I really have to say I'd rather eat my young her head than see her walk into the tent at Bryant Park.
     I want Jerrell there.
Yes, he's very costumey. (And McQueen isn't? Why do these people bark about costumery being some sort of outside agitator in fashion's quiet white suburb? And don't get me started on unbalanced viewing of fashion that doesn't come from a completely White New York-oriented paradigm. Just don't.)
He's also gifted. And funny. And self-deprecating at just the right times.
     And he's kind.
Behind the bitchy comments and the flamboyance is the person who found just the right thing to say to Stella when she was the last person to be chosen as a team mate, praising her for her leather work and telling her that was just what he needed. He didn't need to say it, but he did. I started to love him then, and I still love him now.
Think about it. When I can watch talent, humor and kindness, do I exchange that for talent and whiney self-defensive, self-involved junior high drama?
Well? What the hell you do think I'd take?
     Dayum.

David taped it for me since I was at work. I should have known they picked the wrong person given how unexcited he was.

Now I'm pissed. Jerrell was fantastic and, as you say, nice. I live in a world where the nice people don't win. I hate it.

Hey there! You're so right. I get so disappointed when PR producers override the judges - because I really get the feelin)g that Kors and Nina didn't want to pass Kenley through, either last week or these week. I know I shouldn't be surprised, given that it's a reality (for whatever degree of "reality" we'd like to attach to the term) show, but still - for the most part, PR has been relatively free of that in the past. Although, yeah, they let Rami through last year, when they shouldn't have.

(How's the world of artisan cheese these days? I'm sorry we couldn't have seen you and David last weekend!

Great point about how Jerrell handled Stella being the last one picked. And they then worked fastastically together.

I was 90% sure after all my poking around for spoilers that it was an all-girl final 3. But they really had me scared that Korto was a decoy. It’s complete bullshit that Jerrell was even in the running for elimination after winning the last episode. And yeah, of course I’d rather have Kenley be outta there. Yet I’m so freekin’ glad that Korto didn’t get cut. Hers was my favorite collection though I think she’ll end up 2nd behind Leanne. Have you looked at pics from all of them now? I knew there was going to be a wedding dress but I had no idea there would be a bridesmaid final challenge. You’re right, Kenley’s were really damn cute and I can see how that would be strong enough to go through. (Michael Kors was also right about it being a total rip off, just didn't go far enough back in time: http://www.levangelista.net/PhotoGallery/displayimage.php?album=11&pos=41 ) But her collection was a mess and had no coherence so it’s just double annoying to still have her there. Bleh. I don’t trust her At All. Her “apology” to the others was neither sincere nor heartfelt. I really don’t think it’s just TV editing. Did you notice she was the only one that didn’t have any family or friends with her? And Tim didn’t do any fun activity with her, just looked at her stuff and hightailed it outta there. That’s telling.

Holy Hannah! I just looked at that cover - you're right! The little stinker!

Tim was polite and kind to her, and did what a good teacher should. And then vamoosed. She was rude and disrespectful to him during the season, was whiney, refused to take proper ownership of her creations, by which I mean she would not admit to any shortcomings, and in general was worse than even the pencil necked geek winner of S3. Gah, I'm blanking on his name.

I've been wondering, from things Kenley said, if she didn't have a full break with her family (with the exception of her grandmother). And whether she hasn't been so single-mindedly All Kenley, All The Time in New York, that she hasn't made real friends up there.

I bet you're right about it being the Kenley Show to the exclusion of anything else. But I'm also quite sure that she wouldn't acknowledge that and instead it's because she's always left on the outside looking in boo hoo.

Yup. Her inability to understand her own suckiness reaches almost artistic levels.

That apology blew.

Tim Gunn, however, was super cute all night and seems to like them so much! (ok, I am sure not Kenley)

He really seems to care for nearly all the designers, every season; I suspect that's what makes him a good - nay, a great - teacher.

The "apology" went by so quickly that I actually missed it!

I was so frustrated last night. I really think it's completely unfair that Jerrell and Leanne were up for elimination--they had the best evening gowns, which should have been the last real round of eliminations. It really sucks that one dress got him kicked out, when he had just won! And Kenley was so one note all season.

As much as I love Korto, it really should have been a runoff between the two of them. Make Leanne and Jerrell make the wedding dresses as part of their collections, if you want, but don't make them compete, especially with a last minute bridesmaid's dress. (although seriously, have they ever seen the show? Of course they had to do something last minute.)

I really dislike what seems to be the new tradition of taking 4 to fashion week and eliminating one there. It's awful to make people create an entire collection when it won't even count. (and yes, they technically get to show, but that really doesn't matter in my eyes. They're not part of it.) Blah blah blah, they couldn't make a decision. Bullshit. They make tough decisions every other week, they can't make one when it really counts? Stupid ratings grabs that are terrible to the designers.

All that said, I did think Jerrell's dress was kind of iffy. If the whole bust part hadn't been jeweled, I think it would have worked better for me. I did love his bridesmaid's dress, though, and didn't at all think it looked old. Korto's dress really worried me too. I liked the idea of it, but it gripped the hips of the model weirdly and was too overworked. Her bridesmaid's dress was cute, but I think she went too far in the other direction trying to distinguish it from her wedding dress.

I loved Leanne's dress. I think the whole idea of waves is cool, and the way she's tying it together is great. I really liked her bridesmaid's dress too--although, what is with the super short bridesmaid's dresses? I think they were all cute (ok, maybe not Korto's :( ) but I think Leanne's, in particular, could have been tea-length and looked cute. I am probably out of touch with the kids these days, though. Er. The kids getting married? I don't know.

Reluctantly, I have to say that I did like Kenley's dress. It was more fairytale than I would wear and for some reason the cream parts on top of the huge skirt made me think of pelts, but it was cute. I am not quite sure of the connection between it and the bridesmaid's dress, though.

Wow, that was long.

Yeah - take four and leave it at that, as they did in S3, or keep it at 3. The four plus cutesy last minute surprise challenges stink on ice.

Both BB and I loved Jerrell's bridesmaid dress. And I've been hoping for Leanne to win for about the past six weeks, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Exactly! If you can't decide, just let all four of them show.

I really really hope Leanne wins.

Even though I personally prefer Korto's collection, I really hope Leanne wins, too. I think she'll do great things.

Is it decoys in general or the refusal to name the final three in particular that annoys you? For me its the latter. I understand the necessity of the decoy collections since it's not a live finale. And frankly, those not competing but still showing are getting a massive leg up in the industry and they need to bring it like they're trying to win the prize. I think Joe did a perfect job of that this year. He showcased exactly what it is that he already does, and does WELL, and will undoubtedly make connections and be able to expand his business because of it.

But that leads me to one of the many things I find troubling about Kenley: she doesn't seem to understand that fashion is a business. If her "dream" was to show at Bryant Park, then how come she's so dismissive of criticism and the idea that her customers might be more diverse than Bettie Page grrrls like herself? I wonder if she's less a designer and more of an incredibly skilled dress maker. Her fit is impeccable. But can she ever do more than 80's 50's silhouettes?

I think there are some gifted designers who don't understand business. Heck, look at Jay from the first season - he almost completely knee-capped his own career with some of his moves. On the other hand, I think Kenley is just self-centeredly, obtusely, stupid about it.

As I understand it, it was Jay's refusal to take the prize that led directly to a) them changing the terms of the prize and b) Nina's hours-long arguing for a Chloe Dao win in the second season. They were afraid that Santino would be too artistically tempered and "pull a Jay" essentially.

It's that they won't name the final three--I mean, if you can't decide, for real, then send all four. It's mean to eliminate one at fashion week. The decoys don't bother me. It is great that they all get to show and it is good for their careers. I just think making someone think that they're going to have the chance to win, and spend all that time working on their collection to end up a decoy, sucks.

I definitely agree about Kenley. I really don't understand her inability to take even Tim's criticism--his is never mean and is super helpful! And her attitude on the runway is ridiculous. You only get to be a bitchy obnoxious designer once you're famous for your clothes. (not reality show famous)
