Happy, Happy!

Happy Birthday to
[personal profile] carbonel , who celebrated on Oct. 11. She is a thoughtful and creative person who is always a pleasure to communicate with, even though I do so rarely. I've received helpful advice from her on many occasions, when she didn't need to take the effort, something I've always appreciated. She's a fan, someone who can create in words and in textiles (the latter fills me with a certain amount of awe), someone who understands the joys of fic reading and writing, and who is someone I'm glad I know. I hope you had an excellent birthday, and will have an excellent year!

And Happy Birthday today to
[personal profile] brithistorian  - I hope your day has been properly celebrated by loved ones and friends. You are someone whose posts I always enjoy reading, even if I say altogether too little in response to them. I hope the coming year is filled with academic success, family connections, work accomplishments, and fannish enjoyments. Go, you! Dept. of Delayed Birthdays

Natal Celebrations Past and Almost Present

I haven't sent off birthday wishes to a number of people who definitely deserve them, so I'll start Monday off by doing that.

Back on Oct. 4,
rmjwellhad a birthday. He is a proud supporter and photographic archivist of some of the best amateur burlesque in the west (and probably the east as well.) He's a fan, a dad of twins, with all the patience that implies, and he is both funny and wise when he observes the world and comments on it. He doesn't show up in Journal land much these days, so I'll probably wish him belated birthday wishes elsewhere as well, but doing so here gives me the ability to introduce you to a truly delightful man.

On Oct. 6, the lovely
heatherbellescelebrated, and I hope it was a marvelous celebration. She is an historical curator - one of the first I'd ever met - and a Whovian, who I first met on TWoP, of blessed memory. She was one of the people who first made me feel welcome in the aether. She is cheerful, funny, kind, and very much a delight to know, even if it's at a pixellated remove. My dear, I hope you had a fanTAStic birthday, and that the year to come is equally good for you!

Another Oct. 6 celebrant is
[personal profile] supergee , who is another wise person I met on These Here Intarwebz, and how lucky I am to have the chance to meet such people. He is a calm and steadfast proponent of both the mind and the heart, and can speak on behalf of both in pithily accurate commentary. We don't always agree (I think good music's been made right up until yesterday, and will probably be made today and tomorrow as well, for instance), but this world would be a much less interesting place without him in it. Many happy returns of the day, a few days late.

 A Birthday Wish

Happy birthday yesterday to
[personal profile] strannik01  who is, like me, a Chicago community journalist. He works much harder than me, combing the city's neighborhoods for stories, and does an excellent job doing so. He knows the neighborhoods he patrols, and he understands community journalism, which makes it a joy to talk to him about the business. Since he knows my situation, we can also talk about that, and you have no idea how much that helps on bad days.

He's also a fan - how lucky am I to know someone who shares my twin obsession?

He has a sense of humor - in two languages, no less! And he is a gentle, generous, and loving soul. I hope his birthday went well, and that the rest of this year is twice as good as he hopes, and only a quarter as bad as he fears.

Dept. of Things Get Better

A Productive Saturday

After feeling uncomfortably down by the end of Friday night, and after worrying about having to clean up the storage basement so early Saturday morning, I found that it worked out quite nicely. I rolled out of bed, staggered to the grocery to buy some bagels, orange and grapefruit juice for whatever laboring condo owners were going to turn up to help clean, and discovered a nice little group of them ready to go. That was a relief, since one of my worries had been that no one would show up (I was supposed to put out a pre-cleanup notice by email and forgot; that, too, made me feel down.) I did discover that yesterday was one of the days where I couldn't drink grapefruit juice, which was a shame, since I love the stuff, but by the end of the cleanup, I felt a lot better than I had going to bed Friday night.

My mood temporarily tanked when I came into the house and found that I'd forgotten to put the lid down on my work laptop; Phillip immediately got on it, and managed to turn on a function that I couldn't turn off, and which made working on the laptop progressively more difficult. I reached the point of screaming at the computer, because doing that prevented me from actually slamming the thing into the floor. I'm not kidding. When I get furious, physical action is something that often happens, and is often the stupidest thing I could do (i.e. tossing everything out of a dresser drawer when I can't find something I want, or physically hitting a piece of machinery that's acting up. It's a serious and dangerously immature habit of which I've never quite broken myself.) Hence the screaming, which damaged nothing except, possibly, my husband's sense of calm.

All hail, therefore, to
[personal profile] owlboy , for answering my plaintive cry for help; he correctly ID'd my problem, and led to the brightening of my world. (And since my own laptop is still in the shop, this is even more important.) I told him he deserved a sonnet, but I didn't have the mental wherewithal to write him one. I may yet do it, although I'm not sure whether that's a threat or a promise .... August Birthdays That I've Missed Until Now

Aug. 2 marked the birthday of
[personal profile] tardis_stowaway . I miss talking to her about fandoms we both love - Who, the MCU, Sherlock (I still believe in John/Sherlock/Mary!) - and anything else that catches our interest. She's a good writer, and a lovely person. So, lovely person, I hope you had a good birthday, and I hope the coming year will be good to you; more than good, great. I also hope to see you around these parts soon!

On Aug. 8,
[personal profile] the_arc5 had her birthday. The last thing she posted over on/here on LJ was a fantastic 2011 commentary on "The God Complex" from Dr. Who; it was fantastic, and I still occasionally reread it, for the keen understanding of humans and the human condition that I think it shows. I don't know what she's doing, or whether she is ever online in this neighborhood. If she is, I hope she accepts this belated birthday wish.

Then, on Aug. 10,
[personal profile] hawkmoth celebrated her birthday. Once again, this is someone I haven't seen around here for a year or so, and someone I'd love to see again. She is a very good fic writer, and she's also an interesting person. If you're out there, or auditing posts from people, I hope you see this, and know that someone who likes you on LJ is wishing you a belated birthday!

A little closer to the actual date,
[personal profile] stillbrainfried celebrated a birthday on Aug. 18. She shares my love of the Ninth Doctor, and of Rose; I hope you had an excellent birthday, and that the year to come is good one for you.*

*I know I say that to almost everyone to whom I wish a happy birthday - and it's because I truly do wish that for everyone. 365 days of decency, happiness, support, creativity and, above all, love given, received, and shared; a gift I hope everyone gets on their birthday.

A Bouquet of Birthdays

BB and I first met
[personal profile] gerisullivan  in 1982 during Chiccon, in a basement room filled with fannish musicians - not a filk room, because there wasn't much filk being played, just a room full of musicians and music lovers enriching each others' lives - and it was one of the most serendipitous meetups ever. BB and she kept eyeing each other, and it eventually turned out they'd come from the same home town. We were immediately struck by her friendliness, her energy, her unstinting generosity, her creativity, and her love of life. Our respect and affection only grew over the years, because Geri was, yes, just that wonderful a person. She no longer lives in the Midwest, having made the East Coast her base of operations for lo, these many years, but we are still lucky enough to see her once and sometimes twice a year. When that happens, we are once again reminded of how amazing a human being she is. She celebrated her birthday on July 21, and I hope it was The Best Birthday Ever. Take care of yourself, my dear, and we'll see you soon!

britgeekgrrl was among the first fans I met on the internet, and she was kind and helpful to me as I and some friends mounted a small campaign to get Dr. Who recaps resumed on Television Without Pity (of blessed memory.) I soon learned that she was a vibrant and lovely person, and I am very glad that she played a part in my discovery of how wonderful online fandom could be. I don't think she's around here much these days, but I send out belated birthday greetings to her - I hope your July 22 birthday was spent with loved ones and friends, and that both the past year and the year to come were and will be good.

[personal profile] hamsterwoman  enjoyed her most recent birthday on July 28. She it was who introduced me to "The Goblin Emperor," which is my favorite comfort read, bar none. She shares my enjoyment of the Vorkosiverse. She writes about her life and her family, and invites those she knows to partake just a little in her world. I am glad to have made her acquaintance her on the internet, and in fandom. I  hope her birthday was wonderful, and I hope the rest of this year is equally so.

On July 19, a very thoughtful and gentle person,
[personal profile] oswulf , celebrated a birthday. This is a person of considerable faith and intellect, and I wish they were around more so that I could enjoy them (selfish, I know.) I hope their birthday was a very good one, and that the year to come is also good to them.

And way, way back on July 16,
[personal profile] medie , fellow Canadian and the indefatigable creator and maintainer of the fandom_stocking community, celebrated her natal day. Happy birthday to you, and many, many more! Natal Felicitations to [personal profile] masakochan !

It's always so much fun to know someone online that shares not one, but many of my particular affections, and [personal profile] masakochan is one of those people. She's a fellow traveler in the Whoniverse, and she knows and loves anime and manga; she shares many of my real world sympathies, and can therefore put up with my intermittent rants about the world.

She loves animals as well as anime, is determinedly making her way through life even when it gets rocky; she's really a lovely person to know, and I'm glad she's part of my online world.

I hope your birthday has been good so far, and I hope it signals a good coming year for you. And one of these days I'll rope you into a discussion about Shingeki no Kyojin's second season. You don't have to spoil me about what's coming, I just want to squee with you over the art (which has gotten even better this season), and the pacing and ... and ... well, this is a birthday wish, not a fangirl squee, so forgive me - and Happy, Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, [personal profile] laurel !

Years ago, now, when I still went to SF conventions in Minneapolis, I met a remarkable young woman named Laurel at a Minicon music party. She was smart, funny (Hey! Bacon Dispensers!), knew more about the Internet than I ever could, loved science fiction, baseball - especially the Twins - and television, and cats, and I was very glad to have met her.

Fast forward more than a few years, and it's been too many of those years since I last had the pleasure of her company. I know life's been less than optimal from time to time for her, but I also know that she's still the smart, funny, Internet-savvy, television knowledgeable, science-fiction and baseball-loving woman I met at that Minicon music party.

Laurel, here's to you, and may this year be chock-full of only the very best things!

Dept. of Many, Many Birthdays

June, I Hardly Noticed You.

And that meant I failed to note a great many birthdays.

Happy Birthday, back on June 2, to
[personal profile] cassie_faith , who keeps soldiering on through tough times, and looks to music and fandom with optimism and hope. May the coming year be better than you ever dared to hope!

Happy Birthday, on June 8 to
[personal profile] acciochocolate , who is a fan, an icon maker of great taste, someone who, I suspect, adores aromas in perfumes and oils as much as I do, and whose stories (both Real Life and fannish) I always enjoy reading. I hope to see you around in the coming year - and nay that year be a good one for you.

Happy Birthday, on June 9, to
[personal profile] livii , one of the first people to tell me my fic was readable, and whose fic encouraged me to write, and write well. She also wrote beautifully about Real Life challenges and successes, and I hope to continue to see her on These Intarwebz for a long time to come.

Happy Birthday, on June 11, to
[personal profile] time_converges , who shares my love for Donna (and whose fic about The Best Temp in the Universe always seemed to have Donna's voice perfectly). Wherever you are, playing Mass Effect, enjoying Elementary, and life in general, may your birthday have been excellent, and may 2017-2018 be very good to you.

Happy Birthday, on June 12, to the long-absent (on LJ/Dreamwidth at least)
[personal profile] dark_aegis . I hope life is treating you kindly, and I hope one day to see you again in pixels.

Happy Birthday, on June 25, to
[personal profile] joking , who shared my life of the Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler and Jack Harkness, and who also understood my love of the TARDIS and Her relationship with that particular OT3. Once again, it's been some time since she's been around on the social platforms where we first interacted, but I hope your birthday was a good one, and I hope to interact with you again in the future.

And finally, Happy Birthday, again on June 25, to
[personal profile] autographedcat , whose song "Second Movement" I just read, and snorfled over, who enjoys The Doctor, and filk, and science fiction, and who I'm very glad to have met here in the virtual world. May the time between now and your next birthday be very, very good.

Dept. of Getting Back Up On The Horse

For A Start

[personal profile] lydy  is brilliant. She is a bit of a force of nature, one I would like to see more of, learn more about, and in general have more a part of my world. I still treasure a night many, many years ago, in the "secret" consuite at Minicon, when I had the benefit of her humor and intellect.

I think I agree with her on things cultural, political, emotional and intellectual at least 80 percent of the time. The other 20 percent of the time? I suspect that we'd probably have some interesting discussions.

She has written an essay that I believe is well worth reading and thinking about, concerning how women, the world, and "the rules" - for every single value and power of "the rules" that might exist in this universe - intersect. It is her answer, or at least an excellent precis of her answer (because her real answer is the way she approaches the world every day), to the question many men ask (in which the asking is too often more complaint about having their privilege questioned than actual question) of women: "How can I interact with you women without being a douche, if you won't tell me the rules?"

I think I agree about 95 percent with this one. And even if I didn't agree with it nearly that much, it's still an excellent starting place for conversations, or indeed for an internal dialogue, if one were inclined to think about it. Because, as I said,
[personal profile] lydy  is brilliant, and brilliance nearly always is an excellent light by which to make one's way in this world. And, as she said to me when I asked if I could link, she wants to start conversations. Many Happy Returns of the Day ...

... to
[personal profile] peoppenheimer , he of extraordinarily rare appearances and extraordinarily rarefied mathematical and philosophical abilities, who celebrated on May 22. May you continue to be all that you are;

... to
[personal profile] lydy , who had a birthday on May 24, and who I have not seen for far too long. I hope she's attending Wiscon, which I think would be a great follow up to London. If she's not there, I hope she's enjoying post-Londinium decompression. She's rather brilliant, independent, radical, occasionally mulish, and all of those things are eminently admirable. May the next year be fantastic for you!

... to
[personal profile] sallymn , music lover, icon maker, fic writer, and genuinely nice person. I have many of your icons, I've enjoyed many of your musical recommendations - in fact, I enjoy interacting with you in many, many ways; I hope your birthday was a great one!

Hurrah for People Who Have Birthdays!

Back on May 5, the most estimable
[personal profile] jjpor  had a birthday, and I hope it was well celebrated. There are certain people that you wish you could meet in real life, and he's one of them. He's also one of the best writers of Who fanfic it's been my pleasure to read.  (And I'm sure he'll finish "Battlelines" Real Soon Now *cough*pleaseohpleaseohplease*cough*) I hope your birthday went well, and that the coming year will also go very well for you!

Moving forward a bit, to April 9, many delayed returns of the day to
[personal profile] calapine , whose stories I've enjoyed and who's now occasional posts have also made me smile over the years. I'm glad to see you an Dreamwidth, and hope to interact with you from time to time.

On May 10,
[personal profile] deathpixie , a fellow Canadian celebrated her birthday. I hope the coming year includes travel, if you want it; friends, happiness at work and at home, and I hope to see you occasionally, here on the Interwebz.

Finally, today is the birthday of the lovely
[personal profile] lost_spook , another of those people who I would love to meet in real life (and you'd best believe that once I've come into my fortune, I shall cross the ocean and take you out to tea!) You are a delight to know; you have a delicious sense of humor, both sharp and gentle; your writing is top notch; your love of all things old television opened up worlds to me - and, in line with that last, you gave me Sapphire and Steel (and Silver!) for which I can't thank you enough. Many happy returns of the day!

Delayed Natal Day Well-Wishes

With everything that's been helping keep me away from being a regular poster, several birthdays got lost in the mix.

Way back on March 28,
[personal profile] sensiblecat  had a birthday. I don't see this lovely individual around all that often these days; when I do, I'm always happy, because she's always had thoughtful and wonderfully chewy thoughts about Doctor Who. I hope her birthday was extra-specially good this year; perhaps we'll see more of you as the year progresses.

On March 31,
[personal profile] merryghoul  celebrated a birthday. She works hard on behalf of Doctor Who fans, helping put out Who Daily. She's a devoted fic writer, and someone who, like me, is a fan of both Clara and River Song. I hope your birthday was everything you wanted it to be!

On April Fool's Day,
[personal profile] sarah531  and [personal profile] purplefringe  — two people who definitely aren't fools — had birthdays. sarah531 loves several worlds within fandom, and I always enjoyed what she wrote. I hope to see her around as 2017 progresses. purplefringe is a gifted vid maker whose work never fails to satisfy. I hope both of them enjoyed their natal days.

On April 4, mizzlaurajean celebrated. She's smart, determined, a loving mom and wife, a citizen activist and a fan, all of which means she's an amazing person. Happy belated birthday to you!

Finally, on April 8, a long ago friendly fandom acquaintance,
[personal profile] mishalak (who took one of the loveliest snapshots of me ever), had a birthday. I hope it went well for him.  This entry was originally posted at http://kaffyr.dreamwidth.org/658794.html?mode=reply, where there are currently comment count unavailable comments. Sending Out Wishes ...

... into the Internet void, for the supremely gifted lyricwrites, who wrote some of the most powerful and beautiful Who fics it's ever been my pleasure to read (as well as a fantastic meta about Amy Pond's wedding that you should all go read, either for the first time or again.)  After being gifted with twins a few years ago (good lord, they should be about four years of age now - go you, amazing Mom!) she found other things to do than hang around on LJ. But I remember her with fondness and with more than a little awe from a writerly point of view. I hope you're doing well, wherever you are, and that someday you'll be back in these parts - and may your family have given you a birthday that was simply superb.

Natal Duo

Happy Birthday to [personal profile] maruad , a fellow Canadian. He's from the province and city where my Nana was born, and he, like me, is a science fiction fan. There's two points of congruence, but they aren't necessary for me to enjoy knowing him. He has a wry sense of humor, a good eye for art (he's also a dab hand at painting himself), and in short, has always been a pleasure to know. I hope today was a good day for you!

A second birthday person is
jessalrynn, and I am very glad I've had the chance to meet her via pixels, if not in real life. She is an excellent writer, and she shares my love of the Ninth Doctor, of the Whoniverse from First to Twelfth, of democracy, of resistance to tyranny, and deserves the best birthday, and the best year possible. I hope 2017 is good for you!

Two Lovely People

Happy birthday, one day late, to the talented wendymr, who was one of the first Dr. Who fic writers I ever read, and whose work ,therefore, convinced me that fic - of which I'd heard very little - could be quality writing. I like to think she helped me become a better writer in Who fandom, because of her gentle, but firm, Britpicking. We may not agree on eggnog or Steven Moffat, but we do agree that the Doctor in general is fanTAStic! We also agree on many things political and labor/labour-related, and I am very glad to have met her on These Here Intarwebz. I hope your birthday was a fine one, and that your 2017 is equally excellent!

Happy birthday, too, to the very delightful
[personal profile] marence  (again, one day late.) She is not around here these days, but I like to think that she'll get some good vibes from Chicago. It would be delightful to see her again some day, to chat about rock and roll and fandom. I hope her birthday was a good one.   This entry was originally posted at http://kaffyr.dreamwidth.org/649053.html?mode=reply, where there are currently comment count unavailable comments. Dept. of Dear Friends

Happy Birthday, lyricalviolet!

I should send you a birthday greeting on FB, which is where you hang out most these days. And I should keep in contact more often, which is something i say every year around this time. I'm bad at it - I'm sure you've noticed. I should be a better friend.  It's been a long time since we talked the art, science, and frustration of fic writing, or fangirled about Who or BSG. In fact, your life has moved on from those days - you have a family that includes one of the cutest little red-heads I've seen in a long time.

But I'll always remember that you were one of the people who impressed me with her wit, and bravery, and creativity, all those years ago on TWoP, in LINDA. And I'll always be grateful to you for urging me on when I began writing fiction again, after decades away from it. I remember our efforts to bring back Jacob's Who recaps on TWoP - and we were kind of successful at that, weren't we?

You deserve a fantastic life, and I know you're having one. I'll drop by FB to say happy birthday one day late - but I grew to know you and cherish you far from FB, so this is where my birthday wish stands. All the best, my dear.

Moar Birthdays - Hurrah!

Today, the giraffe-wary pitry celebrates her birthday. May it be free of the long-necked menaces, and full of all the things you'd like a birthday to feature, including cake, (if wanted); friends (as many as are comfortable, especially if they foot the bill); and happiness (ALL the happiness!) Natal salutations and celebrations!

Today is also a birthday for amberfocus, and I wish her the very best; I hope life with family is wonderful throughout 2017; I hope your muse, for both original fiction and fic, remains active, and that you have all the energy you want to create in both fields. Happy Birthday!

Dept. of Birthdays

Birthdays! Birthdays! Many Birthdays!

Yes, it's been a long time since I posted. It's also been a long time since I've responded to others' posts, which is really sad, because I've rolled past a lot of fascinating posts this past week, posts where people have talked about interesting political or literary issues, neat books they've read, or provided links to interesting stories that I've not investigated, talked about interesting fic events, updated people on their personal lives, and so much more. All those wonderful things and people that I didn't have the spoons to investigate ....

So it's Saturday now, and sometimes the best way to get back on the motorbike, the horse, or the broom is to wish people happy belated birthdays, which I will now do, because birthdays are worth celebrating - hey, everyone who has a birthday is still here, enriching the world!

On Jan. 31,
[personal profile] flowsoffire  celebrated a birthday. I wish both she and I were around more to interact here, because she is really a pure delight. I'm in awe of her language abilities, I think her writing's cool, and I like getting a little window into her corner of the world - but most of all, I like her. I hope your day was a good one!

On Feb. 2 nucleosides celebrated a birthday, and I hope it was exactly the type of birthday she wanted. She's strong, and patient, and she's determined to create the best life ever for the two little ones she loves. She also likes the Ninth Doctor, which I think is evidence of her eminent good taste. May this coming year be good to you!

On Feb. 4, beccadg celebrated her birthday. I'm sorry your birthday was on Superbowl Sunday - that sucks. I like knowing someone who also likes The Heroic Legend of Arslan (I'm still chuffed at the icons you gave me!) May your life over the next 365 days be happier and more fulfilling than expected, and filled with friends and love.

On Feb. 8,
[personal profile] harvey_rrit  became another year older - I hope the celebration was exactly what he wanted. He and I inhabit vastly different sections of the political rainbow, but perhaps the point of a rainbow is to be a rainbow. He is also far funnier than I am, and that's worth a lot. Plus, the tin dog is pretty awesome. I hope you have an excellent 2017.

Also on Feb. 8, the lovely
[personal profile] scripsi  celebrated a birthday. She deserves an excellent natal celebration, so I hope her friends and family gave her exactly that! I am glad we share so many of the same interests (the Doctor, of course, but also music and fan fiction, and I am so glad to have met you on the Internet! Dept. of Beginnings and Endings

2016, The Year That Was a Troll

2016 should have been fired about two weeks after it arrived. Unfortunately, it hung around, like that one guy at the party who manages to insult your parents, alienate your best friend, spill red wine on your best white shirt and possibly absquatulate with one or two pieces of heirloom silverware. Bad cess to 2016, then. And possibly bad cess to its younger brother, who is already looking to be the kind of unfortunate dudebro one hopes one's son won't emulate. I do not hold out much hope, I confess.

On the other hand, hope, like that pixilated aunt you adore even as you know you should worry about her, springs eternal. In fact, she refuses to give up springing, jumping, leaping, pogoing, and otherwise acting in a completely unbecoming fashion, while motioning you to join her on the dance floor. I suppose just one sproing couldn't hurt ....

Meanwhile, there are all of you out there, my friends and acquaintances, all of you eminently worthy individuals, each of you having added something positive to my life. I will, at least temporarily, hang onto my pixilated aunt as she pogos around the room, and wish you all the very, very best 2017. You are in my heart, each of you, and you have provided much of what joy 2016 offered me.

So - wanna join me and Hope on the dance floor?

Dept. of Signal Boosting

A Very Big Adventure Needs Lots of Help

Since many of you have probably already seen this, and helped boost the signal yourselves, I'll just say that
[personal profile] a_phoenixdragon , one of the sweetest, most hard-working, most imaginative people you could hope to meet, a woman who writes, mothers, binds a family together with fierce intensity no matter what the world throws at her, is about to embark on a great - and expensive - adventure. As someone who moved here 35 years ago with two suitcases, I know what it takes to undertake such an adventure when it's only one person. Doing it with a family is an amazing challenge.

Here's a link to her GoFundMe page. As she says in her message, it's probably the worst time of year to ask for financial help, but if you can do so, know it's going to a very, very good cause. If you can't, let other folks know, and perhaps they can.

Because I Remember, Eventually.

Happy Birthday (on the 20th, oh my god, I'm late, I'm late)
apostle_of_eris! I am very glad I know you. You enrich my intellectual life, add laughter to my days, and are, in general, a most admirable creature. May this year be a good one for you, despite everything that it may bring!
